Little is known about an elegant musician from Mali who has had the temerity to seize the “all-male instrument” called the kora and make it her own. Yet singer/composer Madina N’Diaye is used to overcoming challenges to impose her tolerant vision of art and society. Her dextrous playing of the West Africa’s emblematic instrument has not been impeded by the eye infection she contracted at 39 years old that left her blind. On the contrary: it coincided with the recording of her first album in a professional career that began in 1990.
